Google vs. AI Web Crawlers: A Look Inside 14 Days of Crawl Data

At Benson SEO, we recently analyzed 14 days of server log data from one of our enterprise clients. What we found was both fascinating and a little staggering. We gained a clear picture of how differently Google’s web crawlers and AI application crawlers behave on the same site.

The dataset included activity from GoogleBot (excluding Google Images) and three major AI crawlers: ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude.

While Google’s bots have long been known for its efficiency and precision, these new AI crawlers tell a very different story, one that could have implications for server performance, carbon footprint, and the future of web infrastructure.

⚙️ Efficiency Analysis

1. Crawl Frequency and Coverage

Over the 14-day period, GoogleBot crawled 2.6× more frequently than the combined AI crawlers, while consuming roughly the same total amount of data. This indicates a far more granular, incremental approach, revisiting pages strategically rather than in bulk.

In contrast, the AI crawlers made fewer total requests but with heavier payloads each time. These large data pulls suggest that AI applications are downloading full HTML content, and possibly large text fragments to feed their semantic and retrieval models.

Google’s distributed crawl strategy demonstrates a well-optimized balance between freshness and efficiency.


2. Data Consumption

Despite making fewer total requests, the AI bots consumed almost the same amount of bandwidth as GoogleBot.

Each AI crawl event averaged 134 KB, compared to GoogleBot’s lean 53 KB per request. That’s a 2.5× difference and it adds up quickly across thousands of URLs.

Even more interestingly, we found that no JavaScript files were requested by AI crawlers. This reinforces that most AI bots are currently fetching only static HTML or pre-rendered text content — not executing JavaScript or loading front-end scripts the way a browser or Google’s rendering engine would.

AI crawlers appear to prioritize full-text retrieval over traditional web rendering, resulting in heavier per-request data usage but limited script parsing.


3. Carbon and Energy Footprint

Our dataset also included an estimated CO₂ impact value, based on the data transferred and server energy intensity.

  • Both GoogleBot and AI crawlers produced nearly the same total CO₂ output over the 14-day period.
  • However, AI bots emitted 2.5× more CO₂ per crawl event, aligning closely with their larger per-request data footprint.

🟥 Least efficient: AI bots
Their heavier, one-size-fits-all crawl behavior leads to significantly higher energy and carbon costs per interaction.


4. Server Resource Implications

If AI bot traffic scales to Google-level volumes, the impact on server resources could be substantial.

Heavier, unoptimized crawl behavior translates to:

  • Increased CPU and memory load
  • More CDN bandwidth consumption
  • Potential cache inefficiencies
  • And, in some cases, slower performance for real users

For enterprise sites, this could mean noticeably higher hosting and egress costs, particularly as AI agents and retrieval models expand their web crawling frequency.

🧾 Conclusion

Our analysis shows that GoogleBot is roughly 2.5× more efficient than the current generation of AI web crawlers, both in terms of data usage and CO₂ emissions per event.

While AI crawlers are still new and their purpose more complex (retrieval, summarization, semantic indexing), it’s clear that they’re data-hungry and not yet optimized for sustainable web crawling.

As the AI-driven web expands, website owners and SEOs alike should monitor this emerging traffic source closely. Rate limits, crawl directives, and smart caching policies may soon become as critical for managing AI traffic as they are for traditional SEO.
